Visiting Police General Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand where this operation has been developed.
Without any incision in the neck (=scarless), thyroid surgery is performed minimally invasive (=endoscopically by using a camera) through small incisions in the oral cavity. This kind of surgery is suitable for most patients with small thyroid glands and/or small nodules (<4 cm).
A new surgical technique (called “TOETVA”- technique) allows removal of the thyroid gland through the oral cavity without any visible scars on the neck.
During a symposium in Potsdam, October 12th, I was able to discuss this promising technique with colleagues from all over the world.
Is surgery always necessary in patients with Grave’s disease and orbitopathy? A randomized controlled trial, performed at the Medical University of Vienna wants to answer this question.
